Fishermen’s guilds will halt activity at Spanish ports this Monday, 19th, close auction markets, and demonstrate in Madrid and at government delegations or sub-delegations, to protest against the new EU control regulation.
The National Federation of Fishermen’s Guilds (FNCP) has called the strikes and rallies, including those to be held in front of the headquarters of the General Secretariat of Fisheries of the ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA), which will meet with the sector that day to discuss the controversial regulation.
Fishermen will immobilize their boats and close auction markets, many of which are managed by the guilds; the small-scale fleet of the shipowners’ association Cepesca will support the mobilization.
The Madrid mobilization is expected to involve representatives from the 220 guilds that make up the FNCP; those who do not travel to the capital are also preparing rallies at government delegations or sub-delegations.
Fishermen demand “fair, consensual regulations adapted to the reality of the fishing sector,” according to a statement from the guilds.
The FNCP will decide whether the fleet resumes activity at sea depending on the results or agreements of the meeting with the General Secretariat of Fisheries of MAPA, to which shipowners, represented by the Cepesca association, have also been summoned.
The guilds reject the regulation due to controversial obligations such as notifying port entry at least four hours in advance and registering catches from the so-called “zero kilo,” requirements that, according to the sector, do not reflect the daily reality of the small-scale fleet.
The FNCP has denounced that the regulation imposes “absurd, dangerous and inapplicable obligations that jeopardize thousands of fishermen” and proximity fresh fishing, and has urged MAPA to act immediately against these measures.
These fishermen consider the imposition of a four-hour arrival notice to port for vessels fishing just minutes from the coast and making tides of less than 24 hours unacceptable.

Los armadores de la pesca han decidido cerrar este lunes todas las lonjas de España para llevar a cabo una protesta en Madrid frente al Ministerio de Agricultura, Pesca y Alimentación (MAPA). La medida, que afectará al suministro de pescado fresco en todo el país, se produce como respuesta a la situación crítica que atraviesa el sector, especialmente por el aumento de los costes de combustible y la falta de medidas para paliar sus efectos.
Según fuentes del sector, la protesta en Madrid contará con la participación de centenares de pescadores y armadores de toda España, que se movilizarán para exigir al Gobierno una solución urgente a sus problemas. Entre las demandas principales se encuentran la reducción del impuesto sobre el gasóleo agrícola, la revisión de las cuotas de pesca y la adopción de medidas para proteger la flota española de la competencia desleal de otros países.
