[Health Channel/Comprehensive Report]The “Sudan Red” poisonous chili powder crisis continues to spread. After the chili powder imported from the original Baoxin Company was tested, many well-known manufacturers’ products have been infected one after another. Nutritionist Wu Yingcheng said that in the EU food safety notification data, a total of 836 products were found to contain Sudan red, of which 207 were unqualified products, including palm oil. It is speculated that unrefined palm oil and red palm oil are the bulk; Refined palm oil is widely used in processed products such as biscuits, instant noodles, chocolate, and ice cream. Whether the risk after refining and decolorization can be eliminated is left to the evaluation and judgment of government departments and oil industry personnel.

Palm oil also hides Sudan red crisis

Wu Yingcheng’s Facebook page “Nutritionist Wu Yingcheng“The article pointed out that the Sudanese Red Storm is getting more and more intense, but in fact, the biggest impact is not on satay sauce and pepper. What should be most worried about and ignored is actually “palm oil”. Once this thing falls, it will be eaten by all of Taiwan. Sudan red.

Wu Yingcheng said that after checking the EU RASFF food warning notification data from 2003 to 2024, Sudan pigments were found to be unqualified, with a total of 836 notifications. Most of the unqualified products are palm oil, chili powder, sauces, spices, turmeric, curry and other food categories; among them, palm oil accounts for 207 items, which is higher than the 168 items of chili powder products. It is the most unqualified product of Sudan pigment. Largest food category.

Comparing the border inspection data of the Food and Drug Administration, the number of Sudanese pigments found to be unqualified from 2015 to 2024 was 53 in total. Unqualified products are concentrated in food categories such as chili powder (oil), rose petals, and lavender. The “Baoxin Enterprise Co., Ltd.” where this incident occurred has been found to contain chili powder imported from mainland China many times since 2015. The non-statutory colorant Sudan pigment has at least 6 unqualified records imported under the name of Baoxin. However, it is worth noting that there is no inspection record of palm oil in Taiwan’s border inspections.

Palm oil can be found in biscuits, instant noodles, chocolate, and ice cream

Wu Yingcheng went on to say that palm oil is the most produced oil in the world and the largest oil product imported into Taiwan. However, palm oil is not a commonly used oil in ordinary households. It is mainly used as a business oil, that is, it supplies the food processing industry, The catering service industry has long been used in many processed foods, and almost all items that require high-temperature frying use palm oil. If you look closely at the labels of various biscuits, instant noodles, chocolate, and ice cream, you can see traces of palm oil.

Wu Yingcheng emphasized that in view of the “copper chlorophyll” incident that occurred in Taiwan a few years ago, unscrupulous manufacturers actually added the illegal coloring agent “copper chlorophyll” in order to make the mixed oil look like extra virgin olive oil. The color of palm oil needs to be orange-red to look good. Incidents of adding Sudanese red to palm oil have occurred in many countries. There is no guarantee that unscrupulous operators will not illegally add Sudanese pigments at the source. Food operators who import palm oil are advised to include sudan pigments in necessary inspection items; Taiwan’s border inspections should also include sampling inspection items for edible oils and strengthen inspections.
