The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that Minister Cho will visit Beijing on the 13th and 14th to hold a meeting between the Korean and Chinese Foreign Ministers at the invitation of member of the Central Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China and Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
It is reported that the Korea-China foreign ministers’ meeting will be held on the 13th. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs explained that Minister Cho intends to exchange views on issues of mutual interest, such as Korea-China relations, the Korean Peninsula, and regional and international issues during the meeting with Director Wang Yi.
With this visit successful, Minister Cho made his first visit to China since taking office on January 12. This meeting is also the first face-to-face meeting between the foreign ministers of Korea and China since the meeting of the foreign ministers of Korea, China and Japan held in Busan last November. This is the first visit by a Korean foreign minister to Beijing in six and a half years since then minister Kang Kyung-wha in November 2017.
There are also observations that this visit could be an opportunity to change the atmosphere of Korea-China relations. It is also expected that discussions will be held on the specific program and agenda of the Korea-China-Japan trilateral summit, which will be held in Seoul later this month.
During his time as a ministerial candidate, Minister Cho said, “The Korea-China relationship is as important as the Korea-US alliance. “We will try to find a way to maintain bilateral relations in a harmonious way,” he said.
