The U.S. Military killed four people on April 14, 2026, in a strike against a vessel in the eastern Pacific Ocean. This attack marks the fourth deadly strike carried out by U.S. Forces against vessels in the region within a four-day period.

U.S. Southern Command, known as SOUTHCOM, announced the operation through a social media post on April 14. The command shared aerial video depicting a stationary boat equipped with outboard engines being struck by a projectile and exploding.

SOUTHCOM, the entity responsible for U.S. Military operations in the Caribbean and Latin America, identified the four individuals killed as narco-terrorists. The military stated that intelligence confirmed the vessel was engaged in narco-trafficking operations and was transiting along known trafficking routes in the eastern Pacific, though it did not provide specific evidence to support these claims.

Campaign Background and Casualties

The strike is part of a broader campaign ordered by U.S. President Donald Trump, which began on September 2, 2025. The White House has stated the objective of these attacks is to stop Latin American cartels from transporting drugs into the United States.

Campaign Background and Casualties

Since the start of these operations in early September, the overall death toll has reached at least 175 people. The recent surge in activity included strikes on two boats on April 11 and a third boat on April 13, leading up to the April 14 attack.

While many of these strikes have been lethal, there have been at least six instances where individuals survived. In one operation during October, a Navy helicopter rescued two survivors who were subsequently repatriated to Colombia and Ecuador. However, the U.S. Coast Guard has suspended the search for one survivor from an attack that occurred on April 11.

Legal and Operational Controversies

The campaign has faced criticism regarding its legality and effectiveness. Critics have argued that the strikes may not address the primary flow of fentanyl, which is a major driver of fatal overdoses in the U.S.

Specific concerns regarding war crimes were raised following the first strike on September 2, 2025. In that instance, two people survived an initial strike but were killed in a follow-on attack.

When questioned by CBS News about a strike on April 13 that killed two men, a spokesperson for U.S. Southern Command declined to provide further details, stating, For operational security reasons, we cannot discuss specific sources or methods.
