Fuel surcharge for international flights ‘highest in history’ in June … Expensive air ticket burden

Fuel surcharges imposed on international air tickets of Korean Air and Asiana Airlines have once again hit an all-time high due to rising international oil prices.

As the fuel surcharge, which airlines charge separately on fares to compensate for losses caused by rising oil prices, has risen, the total amount of air tickets that consumers have to pay has also increased.

According to the airline industry, Korean Air’s international fuel surcharge for June is applied at 19 levels, which is two steps higher than this month.

Asiana Airlines will also apply 19 steps next month, and a fuel surcharge of 40,400 won to 229,600 won is expected to be imposed depending on the distance based on the one-way distance.

The 19th stage is the highest since the distance proportional section system was applied to the fuel surcharge in July 2016, and it is steadily rising to the 10th stage in March, the 14th stage in April, the 17th stage in May, and the 19th stage in June.

Domestic fuel surcharges for Korean Air and Asiana Airlines will increase from 14,300 won to 17,600 won this month.

In a situation where air ticket prices have skyrocketed recently as seat supply has not kept pace with demand, fuel surcharges have also reached an all-time high, increasing the burden on consumers.
