Get Ready for a Wild Ride: Joe Odagiri’s Highly-Anticipated Film ‘The Oliver Dog, (Gosh!!) This Guy Movie’ Hits Theaters Next Fall

The drama “Oliver the Dog, (Gosh!!) This Guy”, which aired in 2021, will be released in theaters under the title “THE Oliver the Dog, (Gosh!!) This Guy Movie”. Joe Odagiri will be the scriptwriter, director, and editor, and Odagiri will continue to play Oliver (the man in the costume).

Odagiri’s original project “Oliver the Dog, (Gosh!!) This Bastard” was written, directed and edited by Odagiri himself. The story revolves around the police dog handler Aoba Ippei (Ikematsu Sosuke) of the forensic police dog division, who for some reason sees his partner, Oliver, as an old man in a dog costume, consumed with desire for alcohol, cigarettes and women. What’s more, the quirky premise of Odagiri himself playing the role of Oliver the dog costume has attracted much attention.

After the broadcast of all three episodes, many expressed a sense of loss, and in 2022, season 2 will be broadcast with new cast members, and the increasingly chaotic world view will be filled with plenty of surreal humor. It was highly praised in various circles, including becoming the number one trending topic on Twitter (now X), winning the Grand Prix for Best Drama at the Tokyo Drama Awards 2022 and the Monthly Galaxy Award.

Along with the announcement of the film adaptation, visuals of Odagiri’s Oliver standing in front of a mysterious, glowing door were also released. Odagiri said, “I tend to want to open doors that are in strange places, and I always end up thinking, ‘Why is it in a place like this?'” and reflected on his feelings when making the drama, saying, “The TV series ‘Oliver the Dog, (Gosh!!) This Bastard’ was also a production that I took on with that feeling, trying to pry open the door to TV dramas that was closing.”

Regarding the film adaptation, he commented, “Now that live-action films based on original scripts have become a rare species, what will you see behind this door? I would be happy if the view is a shining one.”

“The Oliver the Dog Movie” is scheduled for release in the fall of 2025.
