LOS ANGELES — The San Francisco Giants, in a flurry of pregame activity, acquired three-time All-Star Rafael Devers from the Boston Red Sox on Sunday. The Giants, however, fell to the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-4.
The Giants sent left-hander Kyle Harrison,right-hander Jordan Hicks, outfielder James Tibbs III,and right-hander Jose Bello to Boston in exchange for Devers. The trade occurred just before the Giants’ scheduled game against the Dodgers.
Amid the trade news, Joey Lucchesi made his season debut, entering in relief. The Giants had not officially announced Lucchesi’s addition to the roster when he took the mound. The announcement came after his outing concluded.
Manager Bob Melvin acknowledged the day’s emotional toll. “It was a lot,” Melvin said. “To get it done, though, is something we really needed. It was a huge move.”
Harrison had been slated to start, but the trade forced Melvin to use a bullpen game. Sean Hjelle started on short notice, pitching 3 2/3 innings and allowing two runs. “Just run me,” Hjelle told Melvin before the game. “Squeeze me dry.”
Despite the upheaval, the Giants led 3-2 after four innings, fueled by Christian Koss’s RBI single and jung Hoo Lee’s two-run triple. However, Lucchesi took the loss after allowing two singles, followed by Andy Pages’ three-run homer off Ryan Walker in the fifth.
Daniel Johnson hit a solo home run in the eighth, narrowing the deficit to one run.
Adding to the Giants’ woes, third baseman Casey Schmitt left the game with a left ankle contusion after fouling a ball off his foot. Schmitt had been filling in for the injured Matt Chapman.
Melvin sees Devers as a perfect fit for the team. “This fits us perfectly,” he said.”it’s a power left-handed bat that can go the other way and hit for power in our ballpark.”
What’s next
With Devers joining the team, the Giants look to solidify their lineup and make a push in the NL West. The extent of Schmitt’s injury will determine the immediate impact of the trade.
