Bundaberg Mourns Pheobe Bishop as Vigil Held After Remains Found

Hundreds of people attended a vigil in Bundaberg, Queensland, to honour Pheobe Bishop, a 17-year-old whose housemates are accused of her murder. The community gathered to remember Pheobe Bishop and offer support to her family.
Kylie Johnson, Pheobe’s mother, addressed the crowd, urging attendees to treat the families of the accused with fairness. “They should receive respect,and I expect them to receive the respect they deserve,” Johnson said. She also shared poems that reminded her of Pheobe’s spirit.
Pheobe’s sister, Kaylea, fought back tears as she spoke of her sister. “Pheobe,17 years was never enough for her life,” she said,reflecting on the tragedy.
The vigil included music and quiet reflection, with members of the State Emergency Service (SES), who participated in the search for Pheobe Bishop, among those present. Many attendees embraced loved ones and wiped away tears during the speeches.
The vigil took place in Gin Gin, located approximately 50 kilometers west of Bundaberg, where Pheobe Bishop resided. she had been missing since May 15, after failing to board a flight to Brisbane from Bundaberg.
Police confirmed on friday that they discovered human remains in Good Night National Park during their search. While formal identification is pending, two of her housemates, james Woods, 34, and Tanika Bromley, 33, have been charged with murder. Authorities allege Pheobe Bishop was last seen with Woods and Bromley near a BMX track close to the airport.
Memorials have also been established near the BMX track and outside the Gin Gin home Pheobe Bishop shared with the accused.
cousin Whitney Woodfield described the family as “broken” following Pheobe Bishop’s disappearance.She said she would remember Pheobe Bishop as a loyal person who always stood up for others and cherished children.
“We should not remember Pheobe for the tragic ending that she has experienced; we should remember her for the person she was,for the gorgeous soul she was,” Woodfield stated.
Bundaberg Mayor Helen Blackburn acknowledged the region’s collective grief, stating, “everyone might be feeling a bit tender at the moment.” She emphasized that the vigil served as an opportunity for the community to grieve together and remember Pheobe bishop’s life.
“It is about remembering Pheobe and her life,” Blackburn said. “It is importent that we remember Pheobe has left an imprint on the community and on her friends and her family. She was here,and she meant something.”
Attendees were encouraged to wear butterfly pins or bright colors to symbolize Pheobe Bishop’s free spirit. James Wood and Tanika Bromley are scheduled to appear in court in August.
