Girl’s death: Two arrested, including father

Kannur: Father Abdul Sattar, 55, and Mohammad Uwais, 30, of Azad Road, were arrested in connection with the death of MA Fathima, 11, at Hidayath’s house in City Naluvayal following the denial of scientific treatment. Police said Fatima, who was suffering from pneumonia, was denied scientific treatment and underwent witchcraft treatment.

A case has been registered against them for involuntary manslaughter. There is also a case against Sattar under the Juvenile Justice Act. Both were taken into police custody on Tuesday. The arrest came after hours of questioning. Both were remanded by a first class magistrate. Muhammad Uwais is the Imam of City Kunjipalli.

Fatima, who had been suffering from fever for 3 days, died of pneumonia on Sunday. Fatima was rushed to a private hospital that morning, where doctors said she was in a critical condition. The case was registered following a complaint by Fatima’s paternal uncle.

Police say they were trying unscientific methods instead of taking him to the hospital for treatment. Uwais said the water was given to Fatima’s parents and the child was barred from being taken to hospital. Fatima could not be found to have been treated directly by Uwais. The postmortem report stated that there was no abnormality in the death.

Three elderly people belonging to Sattar’s family have died without receiving treatment under similar circumstances. Their close relatives have given statements in this regard. Sattar refused to treat his daughter, even though he knew she would die if she was not treated scientifically. Police said Uwais had been in contact with them for three years.
