Two women from Glasgow are organizing a 24-hour charity event titled Nailathon 2.0 following a diagnosis of papillary thyroid carcinoma for one of the participants.

Lesley Ross, a 26-year-old nail technician from the city’s east end, is coordinating the challenge alongside her friend Megan Walker. The initiative follows a series of medical events that began when Ross discovered a lump in her neck.

Diagnosis and Clinical Course

Ross first noticed a lump in her neck, which she described as being like an Adam’s Apple, prompting her to seek an appointment with her general practitioner. After being placed on a waiting list for tests and the subsequent appearance of a second lump, she was fast-tracked for further medical evaluation approximately five months after the initial discovery.

A biopsy was performed in January 2025. By July 2025, Ross was informed that the biopsy results were inconclusive and that the removal of half of her thyroid was necessary. Following surgery in August 2025, she received a formal diagnosis in October 2025 of papillary thyroid carcinoma.

Papillary thyroid carcinoma is characterized as a common and slow-growing form of thyroid cancer. Despite the classification of the disease as a better cancer to have, Ross described the physical and emotional toll of the experience, including the necessity of surgery and repeated needle treatments.

Impact on Health and Wellbeing

The diagnosis led to a significant shift in Ross’s physical health and daily functioning. Prior to the illness, she described herself as a fit and healthy individual who maintained a schedule from 5 a.m. To 10 p.m. Following the diagnosis and treatment, she experienced a period where she was bedbound for several months.

Ross noted that while there are more aggressive forms of cancer, the psychological impact of the diagnosis remains profound. She stated that the experience has changed her as a person and that she continues to work through the recovery process.

Community Support and Charity Initiatives

The Nailathon 2.0 challenge is part of a broader trend of cancer survivors and patients in the Glasgow area utilizing physical and community challenges to raise funds and awareness for health-related causes.

Other notable examples of such efforts in the region include:

  • Fiona Berry, a Glasgow breast cancer survivor, completed a 1,130-mile cycle from Land’s End to John O’ Groats alongside Bill Miller. The 22-day journey raised over £2,000 for the Ocean Youth Trust (OYT) Scotland campaign Knot Just a Fundraiser, which aims to raise £75,000 for youth development equipment.
  • Harry McTaggart, a man from Dumbarton, planned a 309km challenge in March 2026 to honor the memory of his sister.

These initiatives highlight the role of social support and goal-oriented activity in the recovery and coping process for individuals dealing with long-term health crises.
