Gnaoua music, a gateway to initiation and spiritual elevation, stands today as a vector of cultural transmission and a bridge between peoples. Drawing on the rich heritage of African culture, this art form has naturally taken its place on the world’s largest stages. This ascent is largely attributed to the success of the Essaouira Festival, which played a crucial role in the renaissance and widespread influence of Gnaoua.
The Essaouira Festival’s origins trace back to a pivotal moment.
Few people know it, but the idea of the festival emerged after a magical moment: in 2014, Carlos Santana in concert in Casablanca, invites Maâlam Mahmoud Guinea On stage and refuses to let him go. We said that ther may have been something to dig there,
explained a founder of the Gnaoua and World Music Festival. From these passionate beginnings, the festival has blossomed into a global event, attracting over 400,000 attendees annually and showcasing a prestigious lineup of artists.
Mâalam Hamid El Kasri, an emblematic figure of Gnaoua music, affirmed the festival’s profound impact on his career and the current generation of musicians.
I was a civil servant and I had to put leave to be able to come and play. Today, music is my life.
Reflecting on the festival’s early days, El Kasri recalled,
It was so magical that I was hoping to be reinvited.I have indeed been reingated and since then I have never left Essaouira again.
While Gnaoua musicians possess a natural gift, thier evolution has been shaped by interactions with artists from around the world.
Before, there were very few musicians in Morocco and we all knew each other. Today, there are hundreds of young people who have learned music and we can only rejoice,
said one Mâalem. Though, he cautioned against a superficial understanding of musical transmission:
It is indeed not Mâalem who wants it! Initiation and learning are a long process that takes a lifetime. To be Mâalem, we had to follow the music on track, drink from the hands of several masters and sacrifice its comfort in nomadism to learn everything. And it was only after the death of a Mâalem that his successor was named!
Asmae Hamzaoui, born the same year as the festival, represents the new generation of Gnaoua musicians. As the daughter of a Mâalam, she was immersed in this world from a young age. Encouraged by her mother, she founded her own group, Bnate Toumbouktou, named after the mythical city cherished by her father.
Tagnaouite is a world of men, but I have always been respected by musicians. It is indeed not as easy for other girls.
Having performed extensively and shared her art globally, Asmae remains convinced that
There is no audience such as the Moroccan public. It is he who best understands the depth of tagnouite.
The resonance of Gnaoua music with its African heritage is exemplified by Malian musician Yaya Diabaté’s encounter with the art form in 2009.
I discovered Gnaoua music during a visit to Essaouira,at the invitation of a friend. From the first notes of the Guembri, I was turned upside down. It was a musical shock for me. I recognized my roots and found the same origins of music from West Africa.
Yaya Diabaté, Malian musician
The similarities with the traditional rhythms of Mandingo culture are striking, with the exception of the Bambara language. In 2019, UNESCO recognized Gnaoua music as an intangible heritage of humanity, reinforcing its universal dimension and deep roots in Moroccan culture.
However, it is still not easy to organize this proven festival,
explained a founder, emphasizing the need to protect and nurture festivals like Essaouira, the Sacred Music of Fez, and Mawazine for their crucial role in promoting morocco and its culture.
Despite the challenges, optimism prevails. The director of the prestigious Berklee College of Music believes that Assaouira is a world capital of music. Also the Essaouira Festival hosts the “Berklee on the Road” program which allows musicians around the world to perfect their art under the sign of the institution,
a festival representative noted.
