Go Min-jeong, “Distrust in the Democratic Party’s nomination has built up… Attendance at the meeting is meaningless”

Over the nomination of the Democratic Party of Korea, opposition from some leadership has spread, with Supreme Council member Ko Min-jung not attending the meeting. Rep. Go said that his attendance at the meeting was meaningless as the leadership refused to discuss it even though there was growing controversy over the Democratic Party’s nomination.

In response, pro-Myung groups outside the park put pressure on him, urging him to resign if he refuses to do his duty. On the contrary, there were voices saying that the leadership should seriously consider why such issues are being raised.

On the morning of the 27th, Democratic Party lawmaker Ko Min-jung appeared on MBC radio’s ‘Kim Jong-bae’s Focus’ and responded to a question about how Rep. Go’s absence from the Supreme Council meeting the previous day was even called a ‘boycott’ and ‘refusal of party duties’, saying, “Party duties are the party’s business.” “It is meaningless to go to the meeting because the duty is not being carried out,” he said. “The duty has already been rejected, so what more can we refuse?” he asked. He said that he believes that the current duties are not progressing.

Rep. Ko said, “The Supreme Council is the party’s last decision-making body, and not only the candidates who were eliminated (regarding nominations) but even key party members, including long-time supporters of the Democratic Party, supporters of Representative Lee Jae-myung, and supporters of President Moon Jae-in, are very worried.” “My argument is that each issue should be resolved one by one, even through intense discussions until a conclusion is reached, but since such discussions are not continuing, I decided that it was meaningless to hold a meeting,” he said.

Regarding the inconclusive part, Rep. Ko said, “The biggest problem is that there is too much distrust built up regarding nominations within the party,” including △the problem of not persuading those who were notified of the bottom 10 to 20%, △the issue of opinion polls, etc. I heard. Rep. Go said, “The party conducted an investigation, and it appears that there are some inappropriate things, so it is necessary for the party to take appropriate measures to end distrust in a situation where suspicions are amplified too much.” He emphasized that an explanation must be given as to how it is being rotated. He also said that for the lawmakers who received the bottom 10 to 20 percent, they should at least provide an explanation to the parties or show them the scores for each item.

At a late-night closed Supreme Council meeting held on the night of the 25th, Rep. Goh and floor leader Hong Ik-pyo also raised the issue of preliminary candidate Kim Woo-young, who serves as the chairman of the Gangwon Provincial Party, allowing Eunpyeong to participate in the primary, but it was not accepted, Rep. Go said. Rep. Go said that there was a discussion about it during the meeting and explained, “I expressed my opposition, and the conclusion was that it was not accepted. I will leave it to this point.” In the case of the nomination issue of former Blue House Chief of Staff Lim Jong-seok, Rep. Koh said, “We haven’t even discussed that issue at all.”

In response to the news of Koh’s absence from the Supreme Council, the Minjoo Innovation Council, a pro-party group outside the National Assembly, said in a commentary on the 26th, “Supreme Councilor Koh Min-jung should resign if he refuses to do his party’s work,” and added, “Supreme Councilor Koh Min-jeong and others are engaging in actions that will shake up the party, such as intervening in nominations ahead of the general election. “I hope they stop immediately and stick to their original mission,” he said. The Democratic Innovation Council also disparaged the issues raised by Rep. Ko and others, saying, “If the election is disrupted due to personal greed, you will be judged severely by the people and party members.”

Accordingly, it was pointed out that the leadership of the Democratic Party should first seriously consider raising such issues. Cho Seung-rae, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, pointed out in a phone call with KBS radio’s ‘Jeon Jong-cheol’s Current Affairs’ on the 27th, “If you claim that it is an act based on just one absence from a meeting, how can you express your opinion?” Rep. Cho said, “The top committee members do not have the authority to make decisions or preside over meetings like representatives,” adding, “It can be said that it is their duty to attend meetings and express their opinions when making decisions, but there are people who do not attend meetings once or twice.” He countered, saying, “It is a bit excessive to claim that this is a refusal to do duty.”

Rep. Cho said, “In particular, the leaders and mainstream parties need to think more carefully about why such diverse opinions are being raised within the party,” and added, “We must seriously consider whether those opinions really have a valid aspect and what we can do to collect these opinions.” “It is necessary to go through some process,” he pointed out.
