Google’s Block on Sideloading Apps in Singapore to Prevent Financial Fraud

Google blocks sideloading of certain applications (apps) in Singapore to prevent financial fraud. Sideloading is a method of installing apps through a location other than the official Google App Store.

According to foreign media such as Tech Crunch, Google blocks sideloading apps that abuse Android permissions to read one-time passwords received via text messages, notifications, etc. Google developed the pilot program in collaboration with Singapore’s Cybersecurity Authority (CSA).

Google says there are four permissions exploited by financial scammers. This power is often abused by financial fraudsters to intercept disposable numbers or monitor screens via SMS or notifications.

According to Google’s investigation, most of these apps are installed manually without going through the Google App Store via sideloading. Furthermore, as a result of the analysis of top fraudulent malware, more than 95% of installed apps came from sideloading.

In the future, Google will warn Singapore users when they try to install sideloading apps: “This app may request access to sensitive data.” Sideloading is automatically blocked by displaying a message stating: “This may increase the risk of identity theft or financial fraud.”
