Eighteen-year-old sprinter Gout Gout became the first Australian to legally break the 20-second barrier in the 200 metres on Sunday, April 12, 2026. Competing at the Australian Athletics Championships at the Sydney Olympic Park Athletic Centre, the Queenslander recorded a time of 19.67 seconds to win the men’s 200-metre final.
The performance smashed Gout’s own national record of 20.02 seconds. The run was achieved with a legal tailwind of +1.7 metres per second.
Record-Breaking Performance
Gout’s time of 19.67 seconds surpasses the under-20 record of 19.93 seconds set by Usain Bolt in 2004. According to reporting from SBS, the mark is just 0.02 seconds shy of the all-time under-20 record established by American Erriyon Knighton in 2022, while Al Jazeera reported the feat as a new world Under-20 record.
The victory marks a significant progression for Gout, who had previously set the Australian 200m mark in 2024 with a time of 20.04 seconds, breaking a 56-year-old record held by Peter Norman.
Gout had previously clocked 19.84 seconds during a race in Perth last year to win his first national 200m title, but that performance was aided by an illegal tailwind.
I’ve been chasing it ever since I got that illegal sub-20. It’s been on my mind this whole year … glad I got it for sure.
Gout Gout
Gout noted that he had spent the week prior to the race visualizing a time of 19.75 seconds, making the actual result of 19.67 an unexpected personal best.
Competition and Field
The race saw another historic milestone as fellow Australian Aidan Murphy also broke the 20-second barrier. Murphy finished second with a time of 19.88 seconds, meaning two Australians recorded sub-20 times in the same event.
Gout described the internal competition as a driving force, stating, We have such incredible athletes in Australia, and me being able to race these athletes, we push each other to the limits.
The field was altered when Lachlan Kennedy withdrew from the 200m final. Kennedy had won the 100m final on Saturday, April 11, 2026, before opting out of the Sunday event.
Path to World Championships
The record-breaking run serves as a preparation for the World Under-20 Championships in Oregon, United States, which are scheduled to begin on August 5, 2026.
To prioritize his focus on the 200m event at the world championships, Gout withdrew from the Commonwealth Games, which conclude three days before the Oregon competition begins.
Following the race, Gout celebrated with his family and his long-time coach, Di Sheppard.
