Government Pharmaceutical Organization Accelerates Production of Oseltamivir Treatment for the Flu, Adds Favipiravir to National Essential Medicines List

The Government Pharmaceutical Organization is taking swift action to address the rapid spread of influenza and the subsequent rise in patients. Dr. Mingkwan Suphanphong, Director of the Government Pharmaceutical Institute, emphasized the urgent need for medications and announced that the institute has expedited the production of Oseltamivir, a treatment for influenza. To meet the increased demand, an additional 26 million tablets of Oseltamivir have been reserved and production has been intensified.

To ensure sufficient supply, Oseltamivir will be produced in three different sizes: 30 milligrams for small children, 45 milligrams for older children, and 75 milligrams for adults. Currently, the Government Pharmaceutical Organization has 2,800 kilograms of raw materials, which can be used to manufacture approximately 26 million tablets of Oseltamivir. The tablets for infants will be available for delivery on October 4th, while the 45-milligram tablets will be distributed no later than October 9th. The 75-milligram tablets for adults will be made available by October 2023 at the latest.

In addition to Oseltamivir, the organization has also gathered a reserve of 1.6 million Favipiravir tablets, with the capacity to produce an additional 880,000 tablets. Recognizing the effectiveness of Favipiravir in treating influenza virus infection, the Government Pharmaceutical Organization has written a letter to the FDA, urging them to include this medication in the national list of essential medicines.
