(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Kim Kyung-yun = The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on the 16th that there have been no reports of Korean casualties caused by the volcanic eruption and tsunami (tsunami) in the South Pacific on the 16th.
An official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on the same day, “So far, there have been no reports of damage from overseas citizens related to the eruption of a submarine volcano in the South Pacific.”
It is estimated that 18 Koreans currently reside in Tonga, an island country adjacent to the underwater volcano that erupted this time.
“Tsunami warnings and advisories are being issued in many countries along the Pacific coast, including the United States and Japan,” the official explained.
The embassy will also post safety notices and maintain an emergency contact network with the Korean American Association.
At 1:10 pm the previous day, a submarine volcano erupted in the South Pacific, causing a tsunami emergency in the Pacific Rim countries.
A tsunami warning was issued for the first time in five years in Japan, and evacuation orders were issued to 230,000 people. A tsunami warning has been issued for the west coast of the United States, as well as Canada, Ecuador and Chile.
