Grammys too Honor Best Album Cover Art Starting in 2026
Updated June 16,2025
The Recording Academy is updating its Grammy Awards rules for 2026,most notably adding a stand-alone award for best album cover. The announcement comes after Sabrina Carpenter revealed artwork for her upcoming album, sparking debate online.
The academy said Thursday it would combine the best recording package and best boxed or special limited edition package categories into a single best recording package award. The new best album cover category will stand alone. Charli XCX’s “Brat” won the last Grammy for best recording package; its cover became a popular meme.
Harvey Mason Jr., CEO of the Recording Academy, said the changes reflect the academy’s commitment to representing the music community. “That entails listening carefully to our members to make sure our rules and guidelines reflect today’s music and allow us to accurately recognize as many deserving creators as possible,” Mason said.
Carpenter’s new album, “Man’s Best Friend,” is slated for release Aug. 29. Its cover features Carpenter in a black dress and heels, kneeling while someone pulls her hair. The image generated mixed reactions on social media, with some calling it demeaning and others interpreting it as satire.
If released as scheduled, “Man’s Best Friend” would be eligible for the new Grammy category. The eligibility period closes Aug. 30.
Other changes include the creation of a best traditional country album category. The existing best country album category is now best contemporary country album. Beyoncé won best country album at the 2025 Grammy Awards for “Cowboy Carter.”
The best new artist category will now include artists featured on previous album of the year nominees, provided they contribute less than 20% of the album’s music.
The Grammys will be held Feb. 1 at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.Nominations will be announced Nov. 7.
