There was an accident in Italy where a grandmother accidentally added wine to the formula she was feeding her grandson.

The grandson was a young baby, only 4 months old, who was said to have fallen into a coma after drinking powdered milk containing wine.

According to a foreign media report on the 1st (local time), a grandmother who lives in Francavilla Fontana, Brindisi, Italy, fed her grandson formula around 12 pm on the 29th of last month.

As soon as the baby was fed the formula, he started whining and didn’t seem to want to eat. The grandmother, who felt strange about this, smelled the powdered milk and found that it smelled like alcohol, and realized that she had mixed the powdered milk with wine, not water.

By the time I realized this, the baby had already drunk some of the formula. The grandmother immediately took the baby to a nearby hospital to receive first aid.

The baby fell into a coma for a while after receiving treatment in the intensive care unit, but fortunately, his life was not in danger and his condition was said to be gradually improving.

Netizens who heard the news responded, “I’m glad the baby is safe,” “How could you confuse water and wine?” and “It’s a bit weird to be a mistake.”

According to the grandmother, she mistook the wine bottle for a dark colored water bottle and thought there was water inside.

A police investigation is currently underway, and the local prosecutor who filed the case is said to be reviewing the baby’s medical records to determine whether criminal charges should be filed.

What effect does alcohol have on a baby?

Alcohol is a class 1 carcinogen. Being a substance that is not good for adults, it is sure to be even more lethal for babies.

It is a well-known fact that chronic alcohol consumption by mothers during pregnancy can cause mental disorders and deformities in newborn babies.

The various symptoms, such as physical deformities and mental disorders, that appear in the baby due to drinking alcohol during pregnancy are called ‘fetal alcohol syndrome’.

It is not yet clear how much alcohol causes fetal alcohol syndrome.

Physical malformations that can be caused by fetal alcohol syndrome include microencephaly, cardiac malformations, spinal malformations, and craniofacial malformations, and mental disorders include abnormalities in attention and concentration, hyperactivity, impulsivity, and perceptual abnormalities.

Recently, a link with autism has also been reported.

Above all, children born with fetal alcohol syndrome have a characteristic appearance that can be recognized immediately. Due to cerebellum, the head is smaller than others, Mongolian folds are present, the bridge of the nose is low, and the eyes are often very small.

It is common to have a thin upper lip and a thick lower lip, and there are many cases where people are born with a distinctly different face, such as being born with a generally flat face, a narrow chin, and a philtrum unclear .

It is best not to drink alcohol while breastfeeding. There is a popular belief that drinking beer as a folk remedy increases breast milk supply, but drinking any type of alcohol actually reduces breast milk supply.

Alcohol also affects the taste of breast milk, which can be unpleasant for the baby. Most importantly, if a nursing mother drinks alcohol while breastfeeding, the baby can ingest alcohol along with the breast milk.

Some people think that if you get breast milk after drinking alcohol and throw it away, it’s okay to breastfeed next time, but the accepted view is that it’s of no medical benefit.

If alcohol remains in the blood, breast milk also contains alcohol, so you are advised not to breastfeed after drinking alcohol.
