NEW YORK-The New York Mets‘ 4-0 victory Thursday over the Atlanta Braves propelled them into sole possession of first place in the National League East. However, the win was tempered by an injury too right-hander Griffin Canning.
Canning, a key pitcher for the Mets this season, left the game in the third inning with a left Achilles injury.He is scheduled for an MRI on Friday. Canning is the third Mets starting pitcher to be sidelined with an injury in June, joining Kodai Senga and Tylor megill.
The incident occurred as Francisco Lindor fielded a ground ball. Canning stepped off the mound and collapsed in pain, requiring assistance off the field. Manager Carlos Mendoza described the scene as “horrible.”
“It sucks,” Mendoza saeid.”You hate to see it, especially the way [Canning] went down right away… I feel sorry for the guy, especially how big he has been for us.”
Following Canning’s exit, the Mets’ bullpen stepped up, pitching 6 1/3 scoreless innings and striking out eight. Austin Warren,recalled earlier that day,pitched 2 1/3 innings. Warren said he was motivated by concern for his friend and former teammate.
“First off, I pray for Griff and that he is all right,” Warren said. “I hated what happened to him tonight… I instantly jumped up, got moving around, and sure enough my name was called.” Warren earned his first victory as 2023.
The Mets took the lead in the fourth inning when Juan Soto scored on a sacrifice fly by Tyrone Taylor. Pete Alonso added another run in the fifth with a single, driving in Lindor. Jeff McNeil’s single in the seventh extended New York’s lead.
matt Olson, Braves first baseman, acknowledged the effectiveness of the Mets’ bullpen. “To have a bullpen for [6 1/3] innings,you want to be able to do a little more. Warren threw well. We clearly couldn’t get anything going,” Olson said.
