Harmony of Law and Music: Koo Moon-mo Strikes a Winning Chord at Prestigious Thesis Contest

[대구=김정희기자] Ph.D. student Gu Moon-mo (advisor Professor Jin-won Choi) of Daegu University’s Graduate School of Law (majoring in private law) won the grand prize at the recently held ‘2024 2nd Korea Music Copyright Association Paper Contest’.

In this contest, student Koon Mo won the grand prize in the ‘Generative AI and Music Works’ category. He received good reviews by presenting a study titled ‘A Thought on Data Use and Copyright Issues in Generative Artificial Intelligence – Focusing on Fair Use and Compensation of Musical Works’.

This paper presents four issues related to data learning at a time when damage is being caused to copyright holders due to the use of copyrighted works without consent and lack of fair compensation due to the development of generative artificial intelligence, and to overcome them. It contains suggestions on the use and compensation of music data through efforts to achieve this and its limitations.

He said, “The process of naturally blending elements of technology and law was not easy, but my advisor provided guidance and encouragement to help me understand how to read texts from various perspectives and organize my thoughts, and to understand key issues regarding the current situation not only at home but also abroad.” “Thanks to you, I was able to put an end to my thesis,” he said.
