Heating and Hot Water Supply Disruption in Seoul: 38,059 Households Affected

Heating and hot water supplies were cut off to 38,059 households in 80 locations, including Shinjeong-Gyeongnam Honorsville Apartment in Yangcheon-gu and Guro-gu, Seoul.

According to the Seoul Energy Corporation on the 17th, the cause was presumed to be the damage of a valve in the Sinjeong pressurization plant in Sinjeong-dong, Yangcheon-gu, Seoul. It is said that during maintenance of the pump in Sinjeong Pressurization Plant, the bottom of the valve was damaged and medium-temperature water leaked out.

A pressurization station is a part of a water supply system that increases water pressure and supplies tap water to the highlands. The hot water and heating supply was cut off due to a damaged valve.

The company acknowledged the situation at 3.54pm and activated the second phase of the Disaster Countermeasures and Security Headquarters at 3.55pm.

Excavation of the surrounding area and repair work began at 4.30pm. At 6.50pm, the discharge of accumulated water and steam in the Sinjeong pressurization plant began. Yangcheon firefighters are said to have arrived at the scene at 7.38pm. As of 8:07 pm, heating supplies such as electric blankets are being provided to six buildings in Yangcheon-gu.

The construction company said it is carrying out remedial work, including the installation of temporary bypass pipes, to minimize disruption to the heat supply, but the timeframe for completing the repair has not been determined.

An official from the Yangcheon-gu office said: “Each community center is preparing a rest space for residents who need heating, such as the elderly.”

Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon, who visited the site that day, said: “We will do our best to speed up recovery and minimize harm to residents.”
