Wonju DB defeated Ulsan Hyundai Mobis and advanced to the final of the professional basketball cup.

DB beat Hyundai Mobis 105-95 in the semifinals of the 2021 MG Saemaul Geumgo KBL Cup held at Sangju Gymnasium in Gyeongbuk on the 17th.

DB, which advanced to the semi-finals with the first place in Group C after defeating Sangmu and Korea Gas Corporation one after another in the group qualifiers, continued their challenge of winning the tournament with three wins in three matches.

Hyundai Mobis advanced to the semifinals with the first place in Group D, but this was the first time they actually played in this tournament.

Group D consisted of only two teams, Hyundai Mobis and Seoul Samsung, and had to be ranked through two face-to-face matches. However, as Samsung, who had a confirmed case of novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) in the squad, did not attend the tournament, Hyundai Mobis did not play a game and went straight to the semifinals.

Heo Woong was the key to DB’s victory. Heo Woong achieved a double-double with 20 points and 10 assists, giving the DB a victory. He hit four three-pointers at every turn and caught four rebounds.

New foreign player Leonard Freeman also recorded 27 points and 12 rebounds, raising expectations for regular league performances.

Kim Jong-gyu consistently did his part with 15 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists.

Hyundai Mobis suffered a defeat even though five players including Rashon Thomas (23 points, 10 rebounds), Ham Ji-hoon (17 points), Lee Woo-seok (16 points), Jang Jae-seok (15 points) and Choi Jin-soo (10 points) scored in double digits.

Hyundai Mobis started off well. In the first quarter, Choi Woo-seok scored 9 points and the attack went smoothly, leading to a 31-23 lead.

However, DB, who was once led by 10 points, changed the flow based on stable defense in the second quarter and finished the first half with a 50-46, four-point lead.

DB led the fight under the goal equally, leading to 14-11 in the second quarter, the rebound capital, which was pushed 5-11 in the first quarter. Kim Young-hoon scored eight points in the second quarter alone, including two three-pointers.

DB was 66-54 in the middle of the third quarter, with Heo Woong and Kim Young-hoon’s 3-point shots in a row. It ran up to a 12-point difference.

After that, Hyundai Mobis tied the DB to 2 points for close to 3 minutes and narrowed the gap, and before the end of the third quarter 44 seconds before the end of the third quarter, Ham Ji-hoon’s 3-point shot succeeded in making the score 75-75.

DB maintained the lead with Kim Hoon’s 3-point shot and Kim Jong-gyu’s 3-point play in the 4th quarter, which was 78-77, leading by one point.

With 3 minutes and 27 seconds remaining, Heo Woong fired a 3-pointer to take the lead 95-86.

Hyundai Mobis chased 101-95 1 minute 11 seconds before the end, but after that, Heo Woong threw in all of the free throws he got from the opponent’s foul and assisted Freeman’s dunk shot, putting a wedge.
