“There Can Be Only one”…Delay? Cavill Injury Pushes ‘Highlander’ reboot to 2026
Los Angeles, CA – The highly anticipated Highlander reboot, spearheaded by amazon MGM studios and starring henry Cavill, has hit an unexpected snag. Sources confirm that production, initially slated to begin this fall, has been pushed back to early 2026 due to an injury sustained by cavill during pre-production training.
While details surrounding the injury remain scarce, the delay throws a wrench into the carefully laid plans for the revival of this cult classic franchise. The reboot, directed by John Wick visionary Chad Stahelski and penned by Michael Finch, boasts an impressive cast alongside cavill, including Russell Crowe, Marisa Abela, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, Dave Bautista, and max Zhang.
Cavill is set to portray the iconic Connor MacLeod, the immortal warrior at the heart of the Highlander saga.Gillan will play Heather, his mortal wife, while Bautista is slated to embody the formidable villain, The Kurgan. Crowe will take on the role of the skilled swordsman Ramirez, a character made famous by Sean Connery in the original film.
The original Highlander, released in 1986, introduced audiences to a world of immortal warriors locked in an age-old battle, culminating in a final showdown where “there can be only one.” Despite a lukewarm reception from critics (69% on Rotten Tomatoes) and modest box office success (grossing just $12.8 million against a $16 million budget),the film resonated with audiences (79% audience score) and spawned a devoted following, leading to numerous sequels, television series, and an animated movie.
This reboot has been a long time coming, languishing in advancement hell for nearly two decades. First announced in 2008,the project gained momentum in 2016 with Stahelski’s involvement. Cavill’s casting in 2021 and Amazon MGM Studios’ acquisition of distribution rights breathed new life into the endeavor.
The delay raises questions about the film’s potential release date. Amazon MGM Studios had been eyeing a theatrical release in 2027 or 2028. Whether Cavill’s recovery and the subsequent production shift will impact this timeline remains to be seen.
Producers Scott Stuber and Nick nesbitt are working alongside Neal H. Moritz,Stahelski’s 87Eleven Entertainment,Josh Davis of Davis Panzer Productions, and Louise Rosner to bring this aspiring project to fruition.
While the delay is undoubtedly a setback, it also underscores the commitment to ensuring Cavill’s full recovery and the overall quality of the film. as Cavill himself has hinted, this Highlander reboot promises to be a fresh take on the beloved story, and fans will have to wait a little longer to see what that vision entails.
