Governor Proposes Tripling Benefits to Combat Rising child Poverty
New York families could soon receive a important financial boost under a bold proposal from Gov. Kathy Hochul. The governor announced Monday a plan to dramatically expand the state’s child tax credit, potentially impacting over 2.75 million children across New York.
Hochul’s plan would triple the current credit of $330 per child, offering families up to $1,000 per child under age 4 and up to $500 per child between ages 4 and 16. Families earning up to $170,000 annually would be eligible for the expanded credit.
A Lifeline for Families
“It will be the largest expansion of the child tax credit in our state’s history,” Hochul declared at an event in New York City. The governor emphasized the potential impact of the expanded credit, stating, “Two years’ worth of diapers, a year’s supply of formula, or two months of groceries, at least, months of groceries. So it’s about giving parents the peace of mind so they’re not so stressed out. That’s what we’re trying to do hear.”
Hochul’s proposal comes at a critical time. Child poverty rates, which plummeted to historic lows during the COVID-19 pandemic thanks to expanded federal credits, have begun to rise again as those federal programs ended.
Addressing a Growing Need
“This decision to triple the size of this tax credit has the power to lift us out of poverty, lift our families up and continue the trajectory we’re on,” Hochul said, highlighting the potential to reverse this troubling trend.
The governor will formally unveil her executive proposals, including the expanded child tax credit,in her annual State of the State address in Albany next Tuesday.
What New Yorkers are Saying
News of the proposed expansion has been met with enthusiasm by many New Yorkers.
“It’s possibly huge for families here in New York!” said Sarah, a mother of two from Brooklyn. “She wants to triple the amount families can receive. That could make a big difference for a lot of families.”
David, a father of three from Buffalo, agreed. “hopefully, they pass it! It sounds like a great way to support families and address child poverty.”
Could New York Families See $1,000 Per Child? A Q&A
Maria: Hey, did you hear about Governor Hochul’s plan to expand the child tax credit? It’s huge!
Luis: No, tell me more! My sister has three kids, and she’s always struggling to make ends meet.
Maria: Essentially, she wants to triple the current credit. So right now,it’s $330 per child, but it might very well be up to $1,000 for kids under four and $500 for those between four and sixteen.
Luis: Wow, that’s a notable amount! Who would be eligible for this?
Maria: Families making up to $170,000 annually. The governor says it would impact over 2.75 million children across New York.
Luis: That’s incredible. What’s her reasoning behind such a big expansion?
Maria: She’s really emphasizing the fight against child poverty. Apparently, rates went down during the pandemic thanks to federal credits, but they’re rising again now that those programs ended.
Luis: Makes sense.Every little bit helps, especially for families facing financial hardship.
Maria: Exactly! Hochul said this could be “a lifeline for families,” even giving examples like two months of groceries or a year’s worth of formula.
Luis: I’m sure my sister would be thrilled to hear that.
Maria: I no, right? She’s planning on tuning in for Hochul’s State of the State address next Tuesday when she’ll officially unveil the proposal.
Luis: That’s great! we’ll definitely have to keep an eye on how things progress. This could be a real game-changer for so many families in New York.
