Taking the stairs instead of the elevator can reduce the risk of dying from cardiovascular disease by nearly a quarter, according to recent research published in the journal Atherosclerosis. The study, which evaluated data from more than 450,000 adults, found that regular stair climbing provides a potent protective effect against heart attacks, strokes, and overall premature mortality.
Cardiovascular Benefits of Stair Climbing
Researchers analyzed health data and lifestyle habits from the UK Biobank, focusing on participants with an average age of 56 over a median follow-up period of more than 12 years. According to the findings, individuals who regularly incorporated stair climbing into their daily routines experienced a 24 percent lower risk of death from any cause compared to those who did not.
The study also revealed a 16 percent reduction in the incidence of cardiovascular disease, which encompasses conditions like ischemic heart disease, heart failure, and stroke. Euronews reported that the protective benefits were particularly pronounced among participants who stopped climbing stairs regularly during the study period, seeing their heart disease risk climb back up compared to those who maintained the habit.
