Ecuador’s Arauz Claims Political Persecution Amid Corruption Charges
updated June 03, 2025

Former Ecuadorian presidential candidate Andres Arauz, a prominent figure in the leftist Citizen revolution party, is facing “illicit association” charges. The charges, brought by Attorney general Diana Salazar Méndez, stem from the “Linked case,” which investigates alleged strategies by Citizen Revolution members to influence appointments within the Council for Citizen Participation (CPCCS) in 2024.
Arauz, now secretary general of Citizen Revolution, asserts that these charges represent political persecution orchestrated by president Daniel Noboa’s administration. Noboa, inaugurated for his second term May 24, is seen as targeting his political opponents through the judicial system.
Arauz contends that Salazar’s actions align with a broader campaign to undermine progressive leaders across Latin America. He points to similar situations in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil and chile, where lawfare tactics are allegedly used to tarnish reputations and weaken political parties.
Salazar, who has faced criticism for allegedly targeting left-leaning figures, including former President Rafael Correa and former Vice President Jorge Glas, has also received praise from the U.S. State Department and media outlets. Time Magazine recognized her as one of the 100 Most Influential People of 2024.Though, leaked communications have raised questions about her impartiality.
Adding to the controversy, Salazar resigned as attorney general the day after charging Arauz, accepting an ambassadorship to Argentina.
It’s political persecution. I was a vrey outspoken figure during the most recent election against Noboa and his government, his economic policies, his bad practices in terms of economic mismanagement, and also his corruption scandals. And of course, this is just payback.
