How to Feel to Enter “There”: The Question After a Young Man’s Death on Cabildo Avenue

-Last night, ‍on Cabildo and Teodoro García, in Belgrano, a man died. He bled to death after cutting himself‌ on something while entering a garbage container. What do you know⁢ about what happened?

-When someone who is homeless dies, ⁣the first thing I do is⁤ try to find out their name, if we knew them, although a death is a death and ⁢it doesn’t matter who died. The first thing I thought was how you must feel to enter⁤ a garbage ‌container. I, when ⁢I throw out the trash, try⁣ not to touch anything, I prefer to step on ‍the lever to open it. But there are people ⁢who have to get in there.I try⁤ to imagine what it must feel like. The smell, the‍ uncertainty of ⁤not knowing ⁢what’s ‍there. To think that someone has‍ to go in there to ‍survive,it ‌makes me feel bad.

-Midway thru last year, a group of researchers recorded, ‌in ⁢the first six months of the year, 63 deaths of people in a situation of homelessness throughout the country.

-We have been hearing about people dying of cold, being set on fire or murdered in a fight. But not this. This speaks to negligence, abandonment, and⁤ the fact that‌ what needs to be done is⁤ not being done. The forms of cruelty and abandonment are renewed. We don’t ‍even⁢ know his⁣ name.

-It is true, in the prosecutor’s office they tell us that they did not identify him.

-Many times identity is thought of from a legal ‌point of view, from the ‌ID. But the person‍ in ‌a situation of homelessness needs to be seen, to be named. When I think that no ‌one knows his name, I link it to the fact that maybe there is no one waiting for him. It’s sad.

-The City Government says that this young man, about 30 ⁤years old, had entered the container to ‌look for things to resell. How do people who are on the street make a living?

-There are several profiles. One ‌relatively new one ⁣is the person who has formal or‍ informal work and lives on ‌the street. ⁤They don’t earn enough to pay rent.
