An anonymous patron mourning the loss of her husband plans to pay for every walk-in customer’s meal at two of his favorite fast-casual eateries during two separate days in 2027, according to reporting published by MarketWatch.

A Widow’s Plan to Buy Out Two Fast-Casual Restaurants

The donor lost her husband earlier this year following a long illness. To mark his birthday in April and the anniversary of their first date in September, she intends to cover all orders from open to close at both locations, without publicity or online orders, according to MarketWatch.

Logistical Hurdles and Fraud Alert Anxieties

According to MarketWatch, the donor has researched the revenues of both establishments and can comfortably afford the venture. Even so, she faces significant logistical hurdles regarding payment processing. She expressed concern that handing credit cards directly to staff could trigger automated fraud alerts.

“I’m concerned that my card issuers might freeze or flag the cards when they suddenly see an extraordinary number of transactions.”

To mitigate banking freezes, she floated alternative methods such as placing a substantial good-faith deposit and settling any remaining balance at the end of the day, according to MarketWatch.

Financial Counsel and Spending Cap Strategies

Responding to the inquiry in his advice column, MarketWatch financial columnist Quentin Fottrell suggested that the donor establish a strict spending cap based on estimated daily revenue—such as $10,000 per restaurant—to prevent runaway costs if word of the giveaway leaks.

Fottrell also advised matching physical receipts rather than handing credit cards directly to employees. He noted that restaurant management and staff would need to maintain strict confidentiality to prevent individuals from exploiting the generosity by ordering expensive items like fillet steaks or premium alcohol, according to MarketWatch.
