Key Findings: Single-Dose HPV Vaccine Shows Promise
A new study suggests that a single dose of the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine may be as effective as two doses in preventing HPV infection, which is a primary cause of cervical cancer. Researchers reported these findings on Wednesday, December 4, 2025.
HPV is a very common sexually transmitted infection. While most infections resolve on their own, some can persist and led to cancers years later, affecting both women and men.
Understanding HPV and its Impact
Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a group of more than 200 related viruses. At least 14 of these HPV types can cause cancer, most commonly cervical cancer, but also cancers of the anus, vagina, vulva, penis, and oropharynx (back of the throat, including base of the tongue and tonsils). According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 13,000 women in the United States are diagnosed with cervical cancer each year.
| Cancer Type | Estimated New Cases (US, 2024) | HPV-Associated Percentage |
|---|---|---|
| Cervical | 13,000 | ~91% |
| Anal | 9,700 | ~95% |
| Oropharyngeal | 12,600 | ~70% |
| Vaginal | 6,000 | ~50% |
Study Limitations and Future Research
The researchers emphasized that the new study did not provide information on HPV-associated cancers beyond cervical cancer. This is a notable limitation, as HPV can cause several other types of cancer. Moreover, the researchers cautioned that longer follow-
