Moving north-northeast at 15 mph, the storm is tracking toward the northern Gulf Coast near Pensacola, Florida, and Mobile, Alabama, where upper-level winds could weaken it to a Category 1 or 2 before landfall.
Tropical storm warnings and flood risks across Georgia
As reported by cbsnews.com, a tropical storm warning has been put in place by the National Service for Chattahoochee, Crenshaw, Dawson, Harris, Heard, Lee, Macon, Marion, Meriweather, Muskogee, Pike, Quitman, Randolph, Schley, Stewart, Sumter, Talbot, Taylor, Troup, Upson, Webster, and Worth counties. Forecasters project sustained winds of 10 to 20 mph with gusts reaching up to 45 mph in those areas.
A flood watch is also active as 1 to 3 inches of rain are forecast, with locally higher amounts possible.
High wind warnings and expected rainfall totals
A high wind warning takes effect for metro Atlanta and much of North Georgia from midnight Friday through 8 a.m. East winds of 15 to 25 mph are expected to produce gusts up to 50 mph, with stronger gusts possible at higher elevations in the North Georgia mountains.
Rainfall totals are projected to vary significantly by location across the region. Atlanta is forecast to receive 1.5 to 5 inches of rain, while Athens can expect 2.2 to 5.5 inches, Gainesville 2 to 5 inches, Macon 2.4 to 6.4 inches, and LaGrange 1.5 to 4 inches. Blairsville faces a lower range of 0.9 to 3.9 inches, and Griffin anticipates between 2.7 and 5.8 inches.
Airline travel waivers and weekend conditions
Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines is offering travel waivers allowing customers to change flights affected by the severe weather at no extra cost, cbsnews.com reported. Passengers flying to, from, or through Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport on Saturday can reschedule their departure for on or before Oct. 13.
