The President’s Office has responded to International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Secretary-General Rafael Grossi’s statement, calling it “very inappropriate.” A high-ranking official stated that acknowledging North Korea’s possession of nuclear weapons would “shake the foundation of the NPT system.”
Secretary-General Grossi’s statement, as reported by the Associated Press, emphasized the need for the international community to acknowledge North Korea’s nuclear possession and engage in dialogue. He noted that since 2006, when North Korea became a de facto nuclear weapons state, the international community has been absent, and North Korea’s nuclear program has expanded significantly.
Grossi stressed the importance of continuing to call for North Korea to stop its nuclear activities while also considering the need for dialogue. He emphasized the need for a proactive approach, stating, “My motto has always been to participate, communicate, and try something.”
The international community has been imposing sanctions aimed at denuclearizing North Korea. However, the head of an international organization aimed at controlling nuclear proliferation has made a statement that could be interpreted as acknowledging North Korea’s possession of nuclear weapons.
Russia, which has been in close contact with North Korea since the Ukraine war, claims that the term ‘North Korea denuclearization’ is meaningless.
