Great Britain’s quest for promotion in the Ice Hockey World Championship Division I Group A started successfully with a 4-3 penalty shootout victory against Ukraine in Sfantu Gheorghe, Romania.
Josh Waller and Brett Perlini gave Great Britain an early 2-0 lead,but Ukraine rallied to take a 3-2 advantage. Ben O’Connor’s late goal forced overtime, which solved nothing.
In the shootout, O’Connor and Ben Lake scored for Great Britain, while goalie Ben Bowns stopped all four Ukrainian attempts. The victory marked Bowns’ 82nd appearance, tying Stevie Lyle’s record for a Great Britain netminder.
