Idukki Dam | Idukki Dam opens after three years; One lakh liters of water flows out every second

Idukki: The Idukki Dam has reopened after the 2018 floods. At 11 a.m., the shutters of the Cheruthoni Dam open 35 cm apart and the water flows at a rate of 100 cubic meters per second. Shutters 2,3,4 of the dam were opened. The third shutter opened first. Each siren sounded at intervals of 10:50 minutes. A third siren sounded and soon the shutters opened and the water began to flow out.

Power Minister K Krishnankutty said that the dam was opened as per the rule curve. The district administration has earlier directed those living along the Periyar coast to be vigilant. Dam safety officials said there was no cause for concern.

Cheruthoni town is the first place where the dam opens. Tadiampad and Karimpan areas are next. The water flows and then reaches Panamkutty via Periyar Valley and Keerithode. This is where the Panniyarkutty River from Munnar joins the Periyar. This water flows directly into the Pambala aqueduct. From there, the water reaches Neryamangalam via the Lower Periyar.

A red alert was issued on Tuesday morning when the water level in the Idukki dam with a maximum capacity of 2403 feet reached 2397.86 feet. The current water level is 2398.04 feet.
