252 Workers at ArcelorMittal’s Kostenko Coal Plant Affected by Fire Possibly Caused by Methane Gas

The ArcelorMittal Temirtão Company has reported that approximately 252 individuals were present at the Kostenko coal plant when a devastating fire broke out, suspected to be triggered by the presence of highly flammable methane gas.

As stated by the renowned AP news agency, ArcelorMittal Temirtão serves as the representative company of the globally recognized ArcelorMittal corporation, a Luxembourg-based multinational enterprise and the second-largest steel producer worldwide. With a significant presence in the Karaganda region, the company operates eight coal mines, alongside four iron mines situated in the central and northern sectors of Kazakhstan.

Regrettably, this unfortunate incident marks the latest in a tragic series of fatalities within the ArcelorMittal Temirtau workplace. In August of this year, four workers lost their lives due to a fire within the same mine. Furthermore, tragedy struck once again in November, when a methane gas leak claimed the lives of five individuals at a separate mine.

Concerns Raised: President Kassim Jomart Tokayev Criticizes ArcelorMittal’s Government Cooperation

In response to these alarming incidents, President Kassim Jomart Tokayev recently voiced his unequivocal criticism of ArcelorMittal, denouncing the company as the “worst” in the nation’s history with regards to their collaboration with the government.
