Indian racing League Gears Up for Thrilling 2024 Season
The Indian Racing Festival is back, showcasing the Indian Racing League (IRL) with its largest season yet. Indian stars Akhil Rabindra and Nikhil Bohra will compete alongside swiss racer Neel Jani and other international talents.
The IRL, the world’s first gender-neutral franchise-based league, features women racers competing with men in a five-round competition. The Indian Racing League 2024 kicks off Aug. 24-25 at the Madras International Circuit. India’s first night race will follow Aug. 31-Sept. 1 at the Chennai Formula racing Circuit.
Six teams will participate. newcomers Kolkata Royal Tigers join Speed Demons Delhi, Goa Aces JA Racing, Hyderabad Blackbirds, Chennai Turbo Riders, and Bangalore Speedsters.
The IRL lineup includes 24 drivers divided into six teams. rabindra, who in 2019 was the only Asian selected by aston Martin for their Racing Academy and later won the 2022 IRL title, will compete. Jani, a World endurance Championship winner and 24 Hours of Le Mans champion, also joins the competition.
Akhilesh Reddy, chairman and managing director of Racing Promotion Pvt Ltd (RPPL), said he welcomed the drivers to the season. He added that the league prides itself on delivering exhilarating action and is solidifying its place as India’s premier motorsport event.
Raoul Hyman, a British-South African driver, returns this season with his partner from last year, Sohil Shah. In the IRL, teammates share a car across five rounds. The highest-scoring pair wins the Car Championship, and the highest-scoring cars win the Team championship. Hyman and Shah won the 2023 Car Championship.
Shah said the Indian Racing League showcases the excitement and passion for motorsports in India.He added that the grid is competitive, pushing drivers to their limits.
Each of the six teams will have two Indian and two foreign racers, including one woman.Six women racers will compete with their male counterparts in Wold Thunder GB08s cars, which can reach speeds of 149 mph. Fabienne Wohlwend and Gabriel Jilkova will compete, seeking to match Sarah Moore’s 2023 achievement as the first female race winner in IRL history.
Wohlwend said participating in the Indian Racing League has been an incredible experience. She added that the spirit is unmatched, driving everyone to achieve their best.
The IRL also showcases rising stars like Ruhaan Alva, last year’s youngest race winner.Shahan Ali Mohsin, Rishon Rajeev, and Julius Dinesen, a 17-year-old from Denmark with a Formula 4 title, will also compete.
