Indonesia Earthquake-Tsunami Monitoring Detectors Installation
BMKG Enhances Lightning detection and Forecasts for Impact-Based Warnings
Table of Contents
Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) is bolstering its capabilities to predict and warn the public about lightning strikes, a notable weather hazard in the archipelago. These improvements include expanding its network of lightning detectors and developing impact-based weather forecasts.
Expanded Lightning Detection Network
According to Faisal, a BMKG representative, the agency has installed lightning detectors – also known as lightning observation tools - at 38 of its operational units (UPTs) nationwide. These detectors monitor both the location and intensity of lightning strikes, providing crucial data for forecasting and warning systems.
Transition to Impact-Based Forecasting
BMKG is moving towards implementing Impact-Based Forecasts (IBF), a system that goes beyond simply predicting the weather to assess the potential consequences of those conditions. This means forecasts will explicitly state the likely impacts of weather events, such as lightning, on people and infrastructure.
“We can predict where and when lightning will occur due to the surrounding weather conditions,” Faisal stated, highlighting the agency’s increasing ability to anticipate lightning activity.
Understanding Lightning Risk in Indonesia
Indonesia experiences a high frequency of lightning strikes due to its tropical climate and geographical location. lightning poses a significant threat to life and property, causing:
- Fatalities: Direct strikes are often fatal.
- Injuries: Survivors can suffer long-term neurological damage.
- Infrastructure Damage: Lightning can damage power grids, communication systems, and electronic devices.
- Forest Fires: Lightning is a common cause of wildfires, particularly during the dry season.
Resources for Lightning Safety
The BMKG provides regular weather updates and warnings through its website and social media channels. Citizens are encouraged to stay informed about weather conditions and take appropriate precautions during thunderstorms. Here are some resources:
