Intel’s enterprising⁤ foundry business,a cornerstone of ‍its turnaround strategy,is teetering on the brink‍ of ⁤collapse, with ‍the company warning it may “pause or discontinue” the venture entirely if it cannot secure crucial external customers for its next-generation technology. The stark admission, detailed in a recent filing, underscores a challenging period for the semiconductor giant, marked by critically important financial losses and a dramatic decline in its stock value.

Foundry⁣ Bet Hangs in the Balance

The company’s filing ‍revealed a critical lack of traction in the external foundry market. “We have been unsuccessful to date in securing ⁢any significant external foundry customers for any of our nodes and our prospects for ⁢securing a significant external foundry customer for Intel 14A are uncertain,” Intel stated, highlighting the precariousness of its foundry ambitions. This uncertainty has led to significant investor concern and a sharp sell-off in Intel’s shares.

On friday, Intel’s stock experienced a precipitous drop, erasing most of its gains for the year. The shares have plummeted 60% in 2024, marking its‍ worst year on record. This slump is attributed to Intel’s struggles to gain a foothold in the burgeoning artificial intelligence (AI) market, which is currently ⁤dominated by Nvidia, ‍and growing skepticism surrounding the viability of its foundry strategy.

in response to these headwinds, Intel is scaling back its manufacturing plans. The company⁣ announced⁣ the cancellation ‍of ⁤chip facility projects in Germany and Poland and a slowdown in ⁣production‍ at its Ohio plant. The success of Intel’s foundry business is heavily reliant ‍on securing a large, external customer.

Analysts at Barclays expressed caution, noting the impact of⁣ this uncertainty on Intel’s ‍product roadmaps and customer adoption. “Management⁣ wants external customer commitments to pursue the node, but in the meantime, this adds more uncertainty to product roadmaps and makes customer adoption more unlikely,” they wrote in a client note, maintaining a “hold”⁣ equivalent rating on the stock.

Leadership Acknowledges Difficult Period, Workforce Reductions

The⁤ internal memo from the⁤ new CEO, Tan, who replaced Pat Gelsinger, painted a candid ⁤picture of the company’s recent challenges. Tan admitted that his ⁣initial months at the helm have been “not easy.” Intel has ⁣proceeded with a significant portion of its planned layoffs, aiming to eliminate 15% of its workforce, bringing its total employee count to 75,000 by the end of the year.Tan attributed⁢ the current difficulties to past strategic missteps. “Over the past several years, the company invested too much, too soon -⁢ without adequate demand,”‍ he wrote. “In the process, our factory footprint became needlessly fragmented ⁤and underutilized.”

Financial Performance Reflects ⁢Mounting Pressures

Intel’s financial results have mirrored the operational challenges.⁤ The‍ company reported a widening net loss of $2.9 billion, or 67 cents per share, compared to a loss of $1.61 billion, or 38 cents per share, in the same period last year. A significant factor contributing to this loss was ‍an $800 million impairment charge, “related to excess tools with no identified re-use,” indicating a significant write-down of underutilized manufacturing equipment.

Despite these setbacks, analysts at JPMorgan Chase viewed Intel’s decision to re-evaluate its foundry strategy as a “positive step.” However, they cautioned that ongoing market‍ share losses remain a significant concern for the company.
