iPadOS 26 Revamps Apple iPad Multitasking Experience
Updated June 10, 2025
Apple’s iPadOS 26 introduces a redesigned multitasking system, offering users more control over app management.
the update allows users to resize and position apps anywhere on the screen, providing a desktop-like
experience.
The new system is designed to be intuitive. by default, apps open full-screen, and users can engage with the
new multitasking features only when desired. apple executives noted at WWDC that the windowing system can be
disabled entirely in settings.
Once an app is resized, the iPad remembers the new dimensions and placement. This creates an “app screen”
where users can arrange apps to their liking. Unlike Stage Manager, the layout remains consistent. Users can
place numerous apps on this screen, though the practicality of having many apps open together is
debatable.

The early beta version has some quirks. The function of the yellow “minimize” button is unclear. It closes
and re-opens the app without any apparent change. This may be related to new background processing capabilities
for which developers will need to optimize.
Only one app can be actively used at a time. Though, users can scroll in background apps using a mouse or
trackpad. The CMD-Tab app switcher is useful for navigating between apps, but it doesn’t always display every
open app. The Exposé feature provides a complete overview, albeit slightly slower.
The multitasking system can be combined with stage Manager. A bug in the initial beta causes crashes when
opening a second app on an external display.

What’s next
Future updates are expected to address the bugs and refine the new multitasking features, enhancing the overall
user experience on Apple iPads.
