iPhone 18 Pro Leaks: New Design, A20 Pro Chip, and AI Integration

Apple is planning a significant hardware transition for its high-end smartphone lineup in the fall of 2026, centered on the introduction of the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. The most notable development is the transition to a new semiconductor process, marking the first time Apple will utilize a 2-nanometer chip.

According to research from analyst Jeff Pu of GF Securities, the iPhone 18 Pro models will feature the A20 Pro chip. This processor will be the first built on TSMC’s 2nm process, which is expected to provide substantial improvements in power efficiency and performance compared to the 3nm A19 chipset used in previous iterations.

While the 2nm process offers technical advantages, it may lead to increased retail pricing. This is attributed to the rising costs associated with the production of advanced semiconductors.

Connectivity and Modem Upgrades

Beyond the primary processor, Apple is upgrading its internal connectivity hardware. The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are expected to feature the C2 modem, an evolution of the in-house C1 modem introduced with the iPhone 16e in 2025 and the C1X found in the iPhone Air.

The C2 modem is designed to improve 5G and LTE connection speeds while increasing overall power efficiency. This is part of a broader effort to replace third-party modem technology with proprietary Apple silicon.

the devices are expected to incorporate the N2 chip. This follows the N1 chip introduced in September 2025 for the iPhone 17 lineup, which managed Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread connectivity.

Camera and Display Refinements

The rear camera system on the iPhone 18 Pro models will maintain a triple-lens configuration with a large camera plateau, but it will include a significant technical upgrade: a variable aperture lens. This feature allows the camera to adjust the lens opening to better control light and depth of field.

The display design is also seeing incremental changes. While the iPhone 18 Pro will feature a 6.3-inch screen and the iPhone 18 Pro Max a 6.9-inch screen, the Dynamic Island is expected to be smaller. Some reports suggest Apple could move toward a hole-punch cutout in the top left corner, though a reduced Dynamic Island is currently considered the more likely outcome.

Physical dimensions for the Pro Max model may increase slightly. The iPhone 18 Pro Max is expected to measure 8.8mm in thickness, a small increase from the 8.75mm thickness of the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

Other design rumors include a new deep red color option and a Ceramic Shield area for MagSafe charging that may be slightly transparent.

Split Launch Strategy and the iPhone Fold

Apple is expected to implement a new release schedule for the iPhone 18 family. In a departure from previous years, the company will split the launch of its different tiers.

The 2026 fall launch will be headlined by the iPhone Fold, Apple’s first foldable smartphone. This device is expected to measure approximately 5.5 inches when closed and expand to roughly 7.8 inches when open, functioning similarly to an iPad mini with side-by-side app support.

The iPhone Fold is rumored to feature two rear 48MP cameras—one main and one wide-angle—along with two selfie cameras, one for the exterior screen and one for the interior unfolded display. Leaks suggest the device will be designed to avoid a visible crease when opened.
