British domestic intelligence chief Ken McCallum warned that Iran is intensifying attempts to strike difficult targets in the United Kingdom, including military installations, while Russia escalates hybrid warfare against Western allies. Speaking at Thames House in London, the head of MI5 reported that national security threats facing Britain have quadrupled over the past decade, according to an annual threat assessment address reported by Reuters.

Iran Targeting UK Military Bases

The security warning follows statements made by British Prime Minister Bernard Burnham on October 12, 2026, indicating that Iran was highly likely involved in a suspected plot targeting the Royal Air Force Fairford base in Gloucestershire. The facility has historically hosted United States bombers executing air strikes against Iranian-linked targets, triggering heightened security alerts and prompting US President Donald Trump to order the temporary evacuation of deployed aircraft from the station. Iranian authorities have rejected all accusations of involvement in the Fairford incident as well as any broader claims of conducting malicious operations inside the United Kingdom.

McCallum declined to comment directly on the ongoing investigation into the Fairford base plot. However, he noted a significant shift in Iranian tactics over the course of the year, pointing to attempts to compromise heavily defended military infrastructure globally rather than solely within British borders. McCallum stated, Fairford wasn’t an isolated event; there have been previous examples, not just in the UK, but around the world. Operations tied to Iran have resulted in more than 50 arrests across the preceding year.

Russian Hybrid Warfare Across Europe

Addressing the threat from Moscow, McCallum identified Russia as the primary aggressor engaging in destabilizing hybrid tactics that fall short of traditional military conflict. MI5 pointed to specific recent incidents, including an attempted drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport in Germany and cyber operations directed at energy infrastructure in Poland. McCallum noted that as Russian forces encounter heavy costs and limited territorial gains in Ukraine, Moscow is actively working to sow discord across other European nations.
