# Ireland Suffer Heartbreak in EuroHockey Championship Defeat to France
Ireland’s EuroHockey Championship campaign suffered a setback today as they fell to a 1-0 defeat against France in Pool A. A single goal from Mathilde Duffrene proved decisive, despite Ireland’s sustained pressure and numerous penalty corner opportunities. The result leaves Ireland’s hopes of reaching the knockout stages hanging in the balance, dependent on Wednesday’s crucial clash with hosts germany.
## First Half Frustration
The match began with Ireland dominating possession and territory, but they struggled to translate that control into scoring chances. The first quarter saw a flurry of activity around the French circle, but a resolute French defense and a superb performance from goalkeeper Lucie Ehrmann kept the scores level.Ireland’s attacking efforts were repeatedly thwarted, and they failed to capitalize on several promising moves, finishing the first quarter without finding a breakthrough.
The second quarter saw France gain a foothold, earning a penalty corner. While they initially found the net, the goal was correctly overturned upon Irish referral, as the initial shot was deemed to be above the backboard height. Ireland responded with renewed vigour, earning a penalty corner of their own within the first minute of the second half. Hannah McLoughlin’s powerful strike was well-saved by Ehrmann, maintaining the deadlock. Though, Ireland continued to squander opportunities from set-pieces, a recurring theme throughout the match.
## Duffrene Decides It
The decisive moment arrived in the final quarter. Mathilde Duffrene expertly converted a penalty corner with a perfectly executed dragflick, giving France the lead against the run of play. Ireland immediately threw everything forward in search of an equaliser, substituting goalkeeper Elizabeth Murphy for an extra outfield player with five minutes remaining.
However, their attacking impetus was hampered by a yellow card for Katie Mullan, as she challenged for the ball on the edge of the French circle. Despite the numerical disadvantage, Ireland continued to press, and were almost rewarded in the final minute when Sarah mcauley cleared a French penalty corner attempt off the goal line.
## Mullan Reflects on Missed chances
Speaking to RTÉ Sport after the match, a visibly disappointed Katie Mullan acknowledged Ireland’s shortcomings. “We’re gutted,” she said. “We had a lot of opportunities out there today and we couldn’t find the back of the net.”
Mullan praised the French goalkeeper but was critical of Ireland’s finishing. “The French goalkeeper was phenomenal, but we have to take a hard look at ourselves in attack because we expect more from ourselves and we are able to produce much more quality than that in the attacking third.”
## Germany Game is Crucial
Ireland’s hopes of progressing to the knockout stages now rest on Wednesday’s game against Germany. A win is essential, and Ireland will also need a critically important victory for the Netherlands over germany later today to improve their chances.”We have something to prove to ourselves, we have something to prove for how far this group has come and we have something to prove to everyone back home as well, to show the quality team that we are,” Mullan added. “We didn’t show it today, but we will show it on Wednesday.”
The game against Germany takes place at 7pm Irish time.
