San Diego — The San Diego Padres extended their winning streak to seven games on Wednesday night with a dramatic 7-6 victory over the Seattle Mariners, capped by Jackson Merrill’s walk-off two-run double in the ninth inning.
Merrill, who earlier in the game robbed Julio Rodríguez of a potential home run with a soaring catch over the center-field fence, delivered the decisive hit after the Padres rallied for five runs in the final inning. Down six runs after five innings and trailing by four when Luke Raley recorded the second out of the ninth, San Diego mounted a comeback that began with a leadoff walk and continued with a pinch-hit sacrifice fly by Fernando Tatis Jr., followed by RBI singles from Luis Campusano and Ramon Laureano to make it 6-5.
