james Gunn, the visionary director behind the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy and now co-CEO of DC Studios, recently shared a surprising detail about the creation of one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe‘s most pivotal elements: the Infinity stones. The fictional objects, central to the narrative arc of “The Infinity Saga” (phases one thru three of the MCU), were apparently conceived in a remarkably short amount of time.
Gunn’s lightning-Fast Infinity Stones Backstory
Speaking with GQ in a recent interview (available here), Gunn recounted his experiences at Marvel Studios, revealing that he developed the MCU’s iteration of the Infinity Stones’ origin and meaning in a mere three minutes.
Before diving into the specifics, Gunn admitted he was initially unaware of the broader MCU phasing plans. He explained that Marvel approached him with a simple request: “You know, we have been thinking, and we think maybe some of these things have been Infinity Stones in different ways. And so, could you write up what the Infinity Stones mean?”
Gunn then proceeded to write the now-iconic scene featuring Benicio del Toro’s character, Taneleer Tivan / The Collector, explaining the nature of the Infinity Stones. “It was literally…sitting down for three minutes and writing that,” Gunn stated. ”And that’s then what became the rest of the Infinity Stones.” Crucially, Gunn emphasized that he received minimal direction beyond identifying the “red thing and the blue thing” as the Stones themselves.
From Minimal Instructions to MCU Cornerstone
This revelation highlights the often-organic and improvisational nature of creative advancement within large franchises. The Infinity Stones, which drove the overarching plot of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, were not meticulously planned from the outset. Instead, thay evolved from a quick writing exercise into a cornerstone of the MCU’s narrative.
Gunn also clarified a detail regarding the Stones’ colors. Initially, the Power Stone in Guardians of the Galaxy was intended to be red. However, Marvel later decided to designate a red object in Thor: The Dark World as the Reality Stone. This necessitated a color change for the Power Stone, which ultimately became purple in post-production. this demonstrates the fluid and collaborative process involved in shaping the MCU’s visual and narrative elements.
The Legacy of the Infinity Gems
The Infinity Stones themselves are rooted in Marvel Comics lore, originally appearing as the Infinity Gems (initially known as Soul Gems). Gunn’s quick creation of their MCU backstory, while surprising, ultimately proved to be a defining element of the franchise’s success, captivating audiences and driving a decade of storytelling.
