In the wake of his death, friends organized a GoFundMe campaign to support the family, initially aiming to raise $250,000. Within 24 hours, the fundraiser surpassed expectations, garnering over 26,000 donations and exceeding $1.3 million as of Thursday morning, February 12, 2026. The fundraising goal was subsequently increased to $1.5 million.
The GoFundMe description explained that the family faced significant financial strain during Van Der Beek’s two-and-a-half-year battle with cancer. Van Der Beek was diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal cancer in 2023 and publicly announced his diagnosis in November 2024.
