Japan, led by the Self-Defense Forces, is actively supporting Tonga, an island nation in the South Pacific that has been damaged by a large-scale undersea volcanic eruption.

According to Kyodo News, one Air Self-Defense Force C130 transport aircraft dispatched to Tonga as the first line on an international emergency rescue mission arrived at Puamotu International Airport in Tonga on the 22nd via the Australian Air Base and delivered 2.6 tons of beverages.

In addition to this transport, the Japanese government is planning to mobilize one C130 and two C2 transport planes to send drinks, high-pressure cleaners for removing volcanic ash, dust masks, and gloves.

Japan will also dispatch the Maritime Self-Defense Force transport ship ‘Osumi’ to Tonga soon.

It is known that the Osumi flight, which will be equipped with the Ground Self-Defense Force’s CH47 large transport helicopter, will be carrying equipment necessary for relief activities, such as a rear car.

Japan’s Ministry of Defense said it would focus its efforts in close cooperation with Australia and other countries to support Tonga’s rapid recovery and sustainable development.

Earlier, on the 19th, the Japanese government announced that it would provide emergency funds of more than 1 million dollars (about 1.2 billion won) free of charge to Tonga.
