Amazon founder Jeff Bezos predicted that artificial intelligence will drive productivity gains large enough to allow many families to live on a single income while working just a three-day week. In an interview with Fox News anchor Bret Baier, Bezos outlined an economic future where labor shortages replace mass unemployment as workers opt out of traditional five-day schedules. That projection contrasts sharply with warnings from other industry leaders who forecast that AI will eliminate millions of white-collar jobs.
AI Efficiency Could Enable Single-Income Households
Bezos told Fox News that efficiency gains from artificial intelligence will fundamentally alter household finances. You’re not going to need to have a two-earner income household,
Bezos said during the interview. He explained that increased economic output could enable a single salary to support a family comfortably. Furthermore, Bezos suggested that workers might choose shorter schedules as their output multiplies. Some people will also decide, you know what, I can support my family working three days a week,
he stated. That’s what productivity in the economy means.
Hiring Challenges Versus Mass Job Losses
Rather than widespread layoffs, Bezos anticipates that widespread efficiency will create labor recruitment hurdles for businesses. Because employees will generate sufficient income in fewer hours, many will choose to work less or leave the workforce entirely, shrinking the pool of available job candidates. It’s going to actually be difficult to hire people because the productivity in the economy is going to make it so that if people don’t want to work two jobs, they won’t have to,
Bezos explained. Other corporate executives have voiced similar expectations regarding reduced working hours. JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon predicted in an October 2023 interview with Bloomberg TV that today’s children would probably work three-and-a-half days a week. At the U.S.–Saudi Investment Forum last year, Elon Musk similarly suggested that artificial intelligence would eventually make money irrelevant and work optional, likening labor to playing sports and video games.
Contrasting Forecasts From Industry Executives
Those optimistic outlooks diverge from warnings issued by other technology and corporate leaders who expect severe employment disruptions. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei stated in May 2025 that artificial intelligence could eliminate half of all entry-level white-collar roles within one to five years, driving U.S. unemployment to between 10% and 20%. Geoffrey Hinton, known as the “Godfather of AI,” warned in a September 2025 interview with the Financial Times that wealthy individuals will deploy the technology to replace workers, generating massive unemployment and a huge rise in profits. Ford CEO Jim Farley echoed those concerns at the Aspen Ideas Festival in June 2025, asserting that artificial intelligence will replace half of all white-collar workers in the U.S.
