Jeju heavy rain and strong wind warning continued on the north side of typhoon… 200mm heavy rain on Mt. Halla

Rough waves are hitting the sea off Seogwipo Port, Jeju, on the 13th, when Typhoon No. 14 ‘CHANTHU’ is heading north. Currently, a typhoon advisory has been issued for the distant sea south of Jeju Island, a strong wind advisory for mountainous areas in Jeju Island, and heavy rains in mountainous areas and east and south of Jeju Island. Warning, wind storm warnings are in effect for the east, west, and southern coastal areas of Jeju Island.

Due to the influence of the 14th typhoon ‘CHANTHU’, which is heading north, a heavy rain warning is in effect across Jeju, and it is raining about 30 mm per hour, so special attention is required.

According to the Jeju Regional Meteorological Administration on the 13th, as of 11 pm on the 13th, a heavy rain warning is in effect for the mountainous areas of Jeju Island and the north, south, and eastern regions, and a heavy rain advisory is in effect for the western and Chuja Islands, respectively.

Currently, it is raining 40 mm per hour mainly in mountainous areas and 10-20 mm in other areas.

As of 11 p.m. that day, the precipitation for each branch was 200.5 mm for Hallasan Azalea Field, 174.5 mm for Samgakbong, 158.5 mm for Witse Oreum, 27.6 mm for Jeju (North), 72.7 mm for Seogwipo (South), 43.3 mm for Seongsan (East), and 14.1 mm for Gosan (West). The Korea Meteorological Administration predicted that it would rain a total of 500 mm or more by the 15th, including very strong rain of 50 to 70 mm per hour on the 14th as a large amount of water vapor was introduced due to the indirect effect of the typhoon. As the strong wind warning is maintained, the wind is blowing very strongly at a speed of 10 to 16 m/s and an instantaneous wind speed of 20 m/s or more.

The maximum instantaneous wind speed at each point as of 8 pm is 24.2 m/s at Witse Oreum, 23.7 m/s at Marado, 22.5 m/s at Sajevi, and 20.1 m/s at Samgakbong.

However, there has been no significant damage from the typhoon so far.

According to the Jeju Fire and Safety Headquarters, as of 11 p.m., only one damage report has been received. Safety measures were taken as the tent was blown away by strong winds in Daejeong-eup, Seogwipo-si, around 6:51 pm that day.

In addition to the typhoon warning that is in effect in the distant sea south of Jeju Island, as a storm warning has been issued over the entire coast of Jeju, the waves are rising at a height of 2.0 to 7.0 m.

As the typhoon moved north toward Jeju, the sea route to and from Jeju was cut off early, and the sky route was also disrupted by strong winds.

Jeju Island closed Jeju Port at 2 pm on the same day to protect port facilities. Accordingly, the operation of passenger and cargo ships originating in Jeju was completely controlled.

At Jeju International Airport, where the strong wind warning was in effect, 27 domestic flights (17 arrivals and 10 departures) were canceled as of 7:00 pm.

According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, the 14th typhoon ‘Chantu’ is advancing northward at a speed of 4 km per hour in the sea about 170 km southeast of Shanghai, China as of 9:00 pm on the same day.

On the afternoon of the 16th, it will pass through the sea about 210km southwest of Jeju and reach the sea about 220km south-southwest of Dokdo on the 17th the next day. Afterwards, it weakened as a temperate cyclone and is expected to virtually disappear in the sea about 60 km southeast of Sendai, Japan around 9 pm on the 18th.
