Jill Biden’s Ex-Husband Charged with Murder of Wife

Wilmington, Delaware – William Stevenson, 77, the ex-husband of former First Lady Jill Biden, has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of his wife, Linda Stevenson, 64. The charges stem from an incident that occurred at their home in Elsmere, Delaware, on December 28, 2025.

According to New Castle County Police, officers responded to a call reporting a domestic dispute at the Stevenson residence shortly after 11 p.m. On December 28th. Upon arrival, they found Linda Stevenson unresponsive in the living room. Despite attempts to revive her, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

A weeks-long investigation by detectives in the Delaware Department of Justice led to Stevenson’s arrest on Monday, February 2, 2026. He is currently being held at the Howard Young Correctional Institution in Wilmington after failing to post $500,000 bail.

The cause of death has not yet been released, as police are awaiting the results of an autopsy.

Linda Stevenson is survived by her daughter, Christina Vettori, her granddaughter, and her sister. Her obituary described her as a family-oriented woman and a devoted Philadelphia Eagles fan.

William Stevenson and Jill Biden were married from 1970 to 1975. Jill Biden later married President Joe Biden in 1977. Stevenson is also known as the founder of The Stone Balloon, a popular music venue near the University of Delaware, which hosted performances by artists including Bruce Springsteen, Dave Matthews, and the Allman Brothers Band.

Caroline Harrison, a spokesperson for the Delaware Attorney General’s office, confirmed that the arrested William Stevenson is, in fact, the former husband of Jill Biden. A spokesperson for the former President and First Lady stated that Jill Biden declined to comment on the matter.

It is currently unclear if Stevenson has retained legal counsel. The investigation remains ongoing.
