Jim Jordan temporarily abandons his candidacy

The US House of Representatives is still without a speaker. After two defeats, Jim Jordan wants to give up his candidacy – at least temporarily.

U.S. Rep. Jim Jordan has decided against a third attempt to become Speaker of the House of Representatives. The Republican previously encountered tough resistance from within his own ranks. This was reported by the newspaper “The New York Times”.

Instead, Jordan wants to support Patrick McHenry – the current executive chairman. McHenry’s real primary job is to run the election for speaker. The Republican would then be given more powers and remain in office until January 3rd. Meanwhile, Jordan will continue trying to drum up support for his speaker candidacy, The New York Times reports.

That would at least temporarily break the current deadlock in the House of Representatives. This would also make new aid possible for Israel. However, it is initially completely unclear whether such an interim solution will actually come about.

Biden wants to ask the House of Representatives for help for Israel

US President Joe Biden announced during his visit to Israel on Wednesday that he would ask Congress for new aid for the country during the week. He wants to give a speech on Thursday evening in the White House on the Middle East conflict and the Russian war against Ukraine. It is expected that Biden will ask Congress for 100 billion US dollars (around 95 billion euros) for Israel, Ukraine, Taiwan and the protection of the US border.

As long as the intra-party dispute continues, the House of Representatives will remain without “Mr. Speaker” – even as war rages in the Middle East and Ukraine. This means, among other things, that Congress cannot provide any further military aid to Israel and Ukraine. The USA is also threatened with a so-called shutdown in mid-November without a solution to the budget dispute – then federal authorities will no longer be able to spend any money from one day to the next.
