Actor Joe Manganiello details a mystery autoimmune condition that nearly killed him during the 2010s in his upcoming memoir, describing a medical ordeal involving major organ surgery, alternative treatments in Cuba, and a Santa Monica shaman, latimes.com reported. The experiences form part of his upcoming book titled “Bloodlines,” which hits bookstores and online retailers Oct. 13.
Manganiello Undergoes Emergency Intestinal Surgery After Severe Illness
Manganiello experienced debilitating abdominal pain, persistent fevers, rashes, headaches, fatigue, and bleeding digestive ulcers that led to numerous colonoscopies. I was getting sicker and sicker,
he told People. Doctors attempted treatments using Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis medications without success, leaving medical professionals stumped by the escalating symptoms. In 2016, surgeons removed a portion of his intestines during an emergency major organ amputation procedure. He left the hospital 60 pounds lighter than his normal weight and with a colostomy bag. It happened to me, and it’s the truth, and I have all the scars to prove it,
Manganiello told the outlet. The 2010s had featured a stellar start for the actor as he landed notable parts in buzzy projects, but his rise abruptly switched course shortly after he married.
Alternative Treatments in Cuba and Santa Monica
Faced with what he characterized as a medical dumping ground of misunderstood autoimmune conditions and experimental prescription drugs, Manganiello pursued unconventional remedies. His search took him to Cuba, where he licked the pituitary gland inside a goat’s skull in an esoteric ritual intended to reset his immune system. He later consulted a Santa Monica shaman who attributed his physical ailments to generational trauma. Whatever chains there were to the past suffering of my ancestors, they were completely broken,
Manganiello said, adding that he no longer feels any fear about moving forward.
Health Crisis Ends Marriage Before Manganiello Recovers
The health crisis strained his personal life, contributing to the end of his seven-year marriage to Sofía Vergara, while severe distress prompted him to give away a firearm and adopt a Chihuahua named Bubbles. Manganiello has since undergone reconstructive surgery on his digestive tract and stated that he is seemingly cured. I can’t believe I’m alive,
he said. I feel like I was reborn.
